The Waimangu Volcanic Valley is the only geothermal system in the world whose creation can actually be pinpointed to an exact time and event - the 1886 Mount Tarawere eruption.  New active craters and hot springs were formed and the world's youngest geothermal eco-system was born.

Located just 20 minutes south of Rotorua - and 40 minutes north of Taupo - the Waimangu Volcanic Valley and Lake Rotomahana is a protected scenic reserve and wildlife refuge set in pristine New Zealand bush.

View the amazing geothermal features as you follow the walks - hikes range from 45 minutes to 4 hours, along crater walkways.  You'll finish with a boat cruise on beautiful Lake Rotomahana.
